According to Microsoft, your Internet Explorer settings may be causing an issue with MSE updates taking a long time or failing.

You’ll need to press "Enter" after each: Cd\”; “Cd program files\microsoft security essentials Mpcmdrun –removedefinitions –all Exit. When it reboots, open up MSE and click the “Update” button.

If the problem persists, you can also manually install the updates with links provided by Microsoft (links available in Resources).

Clearing your browser's settings can sometimes correct this.

Microsoft recommends using Internet Explorer as your default browser, but any browser you use should be able to restore default settings to correct this issue.
